In the original oneshot I didn't really get to do much with Hanzo & Kuai, their interactions were very short.
They bond a lot on the journey. I think Kuai heals Hanzo when he get's injured.
The journey itself is pretty soft and uneventful, just the pair of them bonding and learning about the others life.
It's honestly the quiet before the storm.
The real drama happens when they get back and Kuai heals Quan Chi.
Being so impressed with Kuai Liang's healing skills, Quan Chi decides he needs to hoard that to himself, resulting in him keeping Kuai prisoner, intending to make money from his cures. (This was, in fact, his plan from the get go. It may even be implied Quan Chi gave himself the injury in order to lure Kuai to him.)
Hanzo initally obeys his bossess orders, but DW he will eventually stop being a fucking moron. He eventually helps Kuai escape, and they go off together. Technically on the run, as Quan Chi wants his money making bunny back, but Hanzo & Kuai are just happy to be together and free.
